Overview

My approach to both research and teaching is cross-disciplinary and collaborative. Two main trajectories run through my work: Asian (New) Media and Migration/Diaspora studies. I completed my doctoral thesis on the implications of new media for the nation of Malaysia in 2008. My book, New Media and the Nation in Malaysia was published by Routledge in 2014.

My current research project titled, The Business of Belonging, is a study of new media connectivity for the contemporary mainland Chinese diaspora in Australia. The main media foci of this study are the Chinese microblogging platform, Sina Weibo and instant messaging platform, WeChat. Other components include the examination of Australian migration management policies and China's diaspora engagement strategies. I also conduct research on issues of identity, inter-ethnic and inter-religious issues with a focus on the people and diasporas from Malaysia and Singapore.

Currently, I am:

I supervise two PhD projects: one on Indonesian internet policy and civil society and; another on cultural heritage tourism in Indonesia. I have previously supervised projects on digital storytelling in Malaysia, cyberwarfare, e-commerce, new media use in retirement villages and collaborative art practices. Enquiries from prospective PhD or M. Phil students on projects in related areas are welcome.

In the past two years I have started reaching out to communities and organised Malaysian political cartoonist, Zunar's, public talk. Community roles include:

Book Series Co-Editor: Media, Culture and Communication in Asia-Pacific Societies
Associate Editor: Transitions: Journal of Transient Migration
ECR representative: AAPI Management Board (2016)

Teaching

I have taught across three different institutions in Western Australia and Queensland since 2003. My main teaching areas are Internet Studies and Media in Asia.

Prior to academia, I have worked in several industries in Singapore as well as Australia. My professional experience includes 5 years as a small business owner, 10+ years in advertising and marketing, a fair few years in production engineering, site co-ordination and even, technical draughting!

The units I have developed include Internet, Self and Beyond at QUT and Exploring New Media Worlds for under and postgraduates from the disciplines of Media and Communication Studies, Information Studies as well as Education and Law. At Curtin College and Curtin University, my teaching has included the units Asian Media in Transition, Internet Politics and Power, Internet Policy, Regulation and Governance and A Socio-technological Introduction to the Internet. In short, my teaching stretches from new media in Asia, socio-technological studies, communication and media studies. I am an experienced teacher and unit designer.
