Brief Summary

I was born in Kos, Greece, and moved to the UK in 1993 to pursue postgraduate studies. I completed my PhD in Medical Sciences at the University of Exeter in 1999. Following this, I worked as a lecturer in the UK, with the longest employment history being with the University of Birmingham which I joined in September 2001 as a lecturer. In 2011 I was promoted by the University of Birmingham to a Professor. In July 2014 I joined the School of Psychology and Speech Pathology at Curtin University where I am a Distinguished Research Professor. I work at the Physical Activity and Well-Being Lab which is a member of the Health Psychology and Behavioural Medicine Research Group . I am also currently a Honorary Professor at the University of Birmingham. I am married and I have two daughters. You can follow my Twitter account for news and information related to my research interests (and personal life!). To pronounce my surname, read “NT” as “D”; Doumanis.

Research Interests

I am interested in personal and contextual factors that optimise motivation and promote performance, morality, psychological well-being and health-conducive behaviours. Areas of interest are physical activity promotion in different community settings, self-regulation of weight management goals (diet and physical activity goals), and psychology of sport with emphasis on applications of contemporary theories of motivation. Some of my publications appear on ResearchGate.  An overview of my research can be found on my ORCID page. A short overview video of my research is here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ms0UMz419Ow

I have developed new research instruments in the form of questionnaires that have been widely adopted and translated (peer motivational climate, psychological need thwarting, controlling coach behaviours). I have also empirically integrated theoretical frameworks in various settings (self-determination theory and self-regulation, self-determination theory and achievement goal theory) and developed innovative interventions for the promotion of physical activity engagement, adherence, and psychological well-being. My research has been published in various journals  (e.g., Perspectives on Psychological Science, Developmental Psychology, Journal of Educational Psychology; Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin, Annals of Behavioral Medicine, Sports Medicine, Health Psychology), and has been supported by funding (over $10.5m) from major research councils in the UK (ESRC, MRC), the ARC, the European Union, the International Olympic Committee, Healthway, UK charities, UK local health authorities, Australian Army Research Fund, and the industry. My research has received awards from various academic and professional organisations (e.g., BPS, ISSI, NASPSPA, ECSS). I have authored two books on statistics that were published by Routledge in 2001 and by Wiley in 2016.

In 2014, I was awarded a fellowship by the UK’s Academy of Social Sciences for exceptional research. The Fellowship recognised that all 34 Fellows for 2014 made “a substantial contribution to wider social science in the UK” and were “leading social scientists”.  In 2015 I was awarded a fellowship from the British Psychological Society (BPS). According to BPS, “A Fellowship is recognition of a significant contribution to the advancement or communication of psychological knowledge or practice, and represents the highest designation that the Society can bestow”. In 2016 Curtin Universtity awarded me its John De Later Award for Research Leadership, which recognises excellence in research, as well as the title of "John Curtin Distinguished Professor".

I am also the Editor-in-Chief of Psychology of Sport and Exercise, the official publication of the European Federation of Sport Psychology, and I serve on the editorial board of several other journals (e.g. Journal of Educational Psychology, Journal of Sport and Exercise Psychology). Further, I have been invited to review papers for nearly 70 different academic journals from the fields of sport, health, educational and social psychology. Other markers of academic distinction include requests from publishers to review proposals for new books or new editions of existing books, and from a large number of national and international grant awarding bodies to review grant applications for Category I funders in Australia, UK, US, Canada and various European countries.  In addition, I have given keynote lectures at several international conferences (e.g., European Federation of Sport Psychology) and invited talks at over 25 universities.  I often engage with the media (The Times, The Independent, Men’s Health, etc.)  in an effort to disseminate my research.

Specialty Areas

Research Supervison

I have successfully supervised as a primary or secondary supervisor nearly 20 PhD students.

Students interested for a PhD under my supervision should:
 a) Send me their CV.
b) Send me an indication of the research area they are interested in.
c) Explain how they are planning to fund their PhD

External Grants: Recently Awarded, Current, and Recently Completed Grants

(Note for UK-based academics: Salary costs for investigators are not eligible budget items in Australia. Further, indirect and estate costs are much smaller compared to the UK. Hence, grants in Australia are typically much smaller compared to the UK. For example, a typical Australian Research Council grant for a period of 3 years is between $250k-$300k.)
