Brief Summary

Mohammed Ali lectures in international health subjects at Curtin and coordinates the postgraduate coursework programs in International Health including the ones offered through Open Universities Australia.

Overview

Ali’s background in international health originated from his work as a physician during 1988-1997 at the International Centre for Diarrhoeal Diseases Research, Bangladesh (ICDDR,B) with children suffering from diarrhoea, other infectious diseases and malnutrition. He also coordinated a nutritional rehabilitation centre at ICDDR,B for severely malnourished children. Prior to Curtin, he taught at the Community Health Research and Training Unit at the Department of General Practice of the University of Western Australia, from where he had obtained his postgraduate qualifications.

Ali was a principal investigator/co-investigator of a number of research projects in Bangladesh including the development and implementation of a management protocol for severely malnourished hospitalised children, HIV sero-surveillance, dietary interventions in bacillary dysentery, and the management of childhood diarrhoea at the community level. He also worked briefly in a remote area of northern Bangladesh developing operations research protocols for a maternal and reproductive health programme. More recently, he has been involved in a study looking at the role and effectiveness of Aboriginal Health Worker in secondary cardiac rehabilitation of Indigenous patients with heart disease and in another study looking at improving forensic mental health care for Aboriginal Australians in Western Australia.

At the International Health programme in the School of Nursing, Midwifery and Paramedecine, Ali teaches and supervises postgraduate students, coordinates the postgraduate coursework programmes in international health, and develops content and delivery for online coursework units.
