Brief Summary

Julian is a senior lecturer in the School of Education. He completed his Master's in TESL at the University of British Columbia (UBC), Canada and earned his Ph.D. in Curriculum and Instruction at the University of Maryland, USA. Before joining Curtin in 2015, he worked as a Technical Director of the Language Learning Research Center (LLRC) at Stony Brook University in the U.S. where he and his colleagues received several national grants to promote less commonly taught languages (STARTALK, a federal grant), develop and strengthen heritage and advanced-Level foreign language education (UISFL, a US Department of Education (DoE) grant) as well as establish online/blended learning modules for Japanese/Korean courses (IITG, a State of New York (SUNY) grant).

Overview

As an EFL/ESL instructor at the university level in Taiwan, Canada and the U.S., Julian has also conducted teacher-training workshops and mentored student teachers. He has taught TESOL-related courses to pre-service teachers, such as Methods of Teaching ESOL, Computers for Teachers, and Teaching ESOL Reading/Writing in the Secondary Content Areas. In particular, he taught a virtual course in a 3-D multi-user virtual environment (Second Life) to collect data for his dissertation research that earned him the Outstanding Graduate Student Award of the Year 2011 from Computer-Assisted Language Instruction Consortium (CALICO) and the Language Learning Dissertation Grant from the Language Learning Journal.

Julian's research interests include but are not limited to computer-assisted language learning (CALL), task-based language teaching (TBLT), blended learning in foreign/second language education, and mixed-methods research design in applied linguistics.
