How to publish your Web Site

Every Curtin student is able to publish their own web site using Curtin's web space. These web sites are available only on campus or through the Curtin VPN.

Find out about:

Web Site details

Your web site address (URL): http://student.curtin.edu.au/~<student number> (i.e. http://student.curtin.edu.au/~99999999)

Your web site is stored in the WWW folder of your I: drive. By default, this folder should already be created, but if not (or if you have deleted it), simply create one:

  1. Start Windows Explorer and click on your I: drive
  2. Click on File > New > Folder
  3. Type "WWW" and press enter.

Any files that you add to your WWW folder can be linked to from your web space and are visible to all of Curtin. You can add files direct to your WWW folder in a lab, or you can FTP files from home.

Creating your home page

To create your homepage you will need to save a HTML file to your WWW folder. The following HTML code and instructions have been provided to get you started. To expand your page and link to existing files you will need to expand on the HTML code provided below. HTML Tutorial and information on creating your own web page.

  • Open Notepad (Start > All Programs > Accessories > Notepad)
  • Copy and paste the following code into Notepad:

    <!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd">
    <html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml">
    <head>
    <meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=iso-8859-1" />
    <title>Hello World</title>
    </head>

    <body>
    Hello World!
    </body>
    </html>

  • Save the file as index.html in Notepad:
    From a Curtin computer lab:
    1. Click "File" menu > Save
    2. In the "Save As" window, browse to your I drive and go into the "WWW" directory
    3. Important: Select "All Files" for "Save as type:"
    4. Enter "index.html" as the "File name:"
    5. Click Save
    From outside Curtin:
    1. Click "File" menu > Save (note the location you save the file to)
    2. Important: Select "All Files" for "Save as type:"
    3. Enter "index.html" as the "File name:"
    4. Click Save
    5. FTP the file to your WWW folder
  • To test your home page, open a web browser and enter the address: http://student.curtin.edu.au/~<student number>. (Remember: Your site is only available on campus or through the Curtin VPN)

Creating further pages and linking to files

To create further pages, follow the instructions for creating your home page above. You will need to slightly alter the code you copied earlier, changing the Title and Body text as appropriate. Save the file under a different name (i.e. assignments.html).

This file can now be linked to using the URL: http://student.curtin.edu.au/~<student number>/assignments.html (see Tutorial on HTML links)

Files in the WWW folder can be linked to using the format of the following URL: http://student.curtin.edu.au/~<student number>/filename
Note: The file name in the link must be exactly the same as the file name in the WWW folder, ensure the file type extension is also used (i.e. assignment_one.xls)
